Manchester United academy loanee Charlie Wellens has been spotted at Carrington training with the first team.

Ahead of the Carabao Cup fixture vs. Aston Villa, the youngster was spotted despite heading out on loan at the start of the season.

It was only a couple of weeks ago that the right-back scored the first senior goal of his career at Oldham Athletic.

He was originally meant to stay until the start of January but it looks like he is back early ahead of Dalot’s suspension vs. Fulham in the Premier League.

Wellens is the son of former Man United graduate and Oldham star Richie Wellens who currently manages Leyton Orient.

His first senior goal came at a difficult time for the club after their manager decided to step aside from the team in late September.

Through official training photos on the Manchester United website, fellow youngsters Shola Shoretire, Noam Emeran and Di’Shon Bernard were also spotted.

It’s possible that some of the youngsters who are yet to feature for Erik ten Hag will get their chance on the bench vs. Aston Villa on Thursday.

A strong starting eleven is expected after the squad’s poor performance against the same opposition on Sunday.

It remains yet to be seen why Wellens is back from his loan early but it could be a result of Dalot’s suspension in the league this weekend.

Aaron Wan Bissaka is back after a long injury layoff but isn’t expected to play a huge part this season, with it looking likely that he will leave in January.

Ten Hag faces a squad selection issue this weekend and could be forced into bringing the out-of-form English right-back into the starting eleven. However, he is not match fit as he has no minutes under his belt at all, so Wellens could be seen as a better option.

As the transfer window shut, a flurry of Manchester United’s young prospects headed for the exit door on loan moves to seek further playing time in senior football.

The latest three to do so were Will Fish, Ethan Galbraith and Charlie Wellens.

The 19-year-old Will Fish has headed north to join Scottish Premier League side Hibernian.

Having captained United’s u23s at just 17 and being capped for England through the age groups, Fish has a strong pedigree at youth level that he will be looking to push on at the senior level after a disappointing short loan spell with Stockport County last season.

The Scottish side’s manager, Lee Johnson, is excited by the move and said “he’s a dominant centre-back who is comfortable with the ball at his feet and adds extra depth to our defence.”

Ethan Galbraith has sealed a move to reunite with Neil Wood at Salford City.

A full international for Northern Ireland, the move has come as a surprise to fans, who expected Galbraith to move to a higher league after a good loan with Doncaster Rovers in League One last season.

With Salford City chasing promotion and with a familiar manager, the move offers a good environment for the diminutive midfielder, who likes to control possession from deep.

With only a year remaining on his contract with United, an eye on a permanent switch may have played a part in the decision.

Charlie Wellens previously looked set for a move to Crewe Alexandra but eventually joined Oldham Athletic in the National League after the close of the transfer window.

The move sees the young right back follow in the footsteps of his father, Richie Wellens, who made over 100 appearances for Oldham.

Speaking on his loan move, Wellens said “playing every week against men, it’s going to develop me a lot as a player so I can’t wait.

Manchester United’s u21s were defeated heavily 1-5 in their second match of the season against Crystal Palace last night. Here are our player ratings for the match:

For a full match report, click here

(A score of 6 is around average)

Dermot Mee – 4 – A disastrous performance, he made two large errors that led directly conceding and generally looked shaky commanding his area and with the ball at his feet.

Charlie Wellens – 6.5 – A strong first half in possession, all of United’s chances were coming through him and he deserved at least an assist from one of them. Quietened up in the second half though and afforded his man too much space on Palace’s third goal.

Will Fish – 5 – A poor display and really struggled with the directness of Palace’s attackers which was seen for their second goal. Made a number of vital blocks and tackles late in the match but it was too little too late.

Bjorn Hardley – 5.5 – The more solid of the pairing, he demonstrated a good passing range on the ball but completely lost his man for the third goal.

Logan Pye – 5 – Didn’t offer a great deal going forward and had trouble tracking his runners at the back post.

Charlie Savage – 7 – Displayed a good range of passing and controlled the midfield in the first half, along with showing a combative side. Capped off his performance with a well taken goal from the edge of the box.

Kobbie Mainoo – 5.5 – Contributed on both ends of the pitch but couldn’t come up in the big moments and kept it relatively safe in possession.

Omari Forson – 5 – A quiet match, he came inside too much and offered little width on the right.

Isak Hansen-Aaroen – 4.5 – Wasn’t able to create any openings going forward and was sloppy in possession, with his turnover leading to Palace’s second.

Shola Shoretire – 5 – Had a few flashes but ultimately didn’t impose himself enough and gave up possession too easily.

Mateo Mejia – 5.5 – Smart play to hold up the ball and lay off to Savage to pick up an assist but missed a couple of good chances and still looks off the pace at times.

Substitutes

Charlie McNeill – 4.5 – Looked like a boy among men and couldn’t make any impact at all and was easily brushed off the ball any time it came to him. This was exemplified when he lashed out twice and on both occassions ended up on the ground while the Palace player was left unfazed.

Noam Emeran – 6 – Added some pace and directness to United’s attack and provided a couple of dangerous balls into the box but had little support.

Marc Jurado – 5 – Came into an unfamiliar midfield role to try shore up the back when Palace took all control and was unfortunate to end up with an own goal.

Manchester United’s u21s hosted their home opener last night against Crystal Palace after starting the season with a defeat on the road against Arsenal.

Looking to improve on last weeks result, the start of the match did not go to plan for Mark Dempsey’s young side.

It was only five minutes in when Crystal Palace put a high ball into the box from a free kick and Charlie Wellens lost the header at the back post. Dermot Mee came out to punch but connected with it poorly putting the ball into a dangerous area and after two attempts Palce bundled the ball into the net to take the lead.

In the 9th minute Isak Hansen-Aaroen slipped through Shola Shoretire inside the left channel but he couldn’t find a teammate with his pullback.

Five minutes later, Wellens played Hansen-Aaroen into the half space and followed his pass inside for the return ball before striking high and wide from 20 yards.

All of United’s danger was coming down the right side through Wellens and the right back put in another threatening cross that hit a Palace arm in the box but United’s appeals were waved away.

In the 29th, United worked the ball around the box from left to right and Wellens delivered it low to back post to find an open Mateo Mejia but the Spaniard soared it over the bar from close range.

Minutes later, United lost possession upfield and Palace quickly countered with Will Fish isolated against John-Kymani Gordon and the Palace forward cut inside of Fish and side footed past Mee to double the London side’s lead.

It was almost déjà vu immediately afterwards as sloppy passing again saw possession turned over and Gordon raced in cutting past Wellens before a unleashing strike that was denied by Mee this time.

Kobbie Mainoo found Mejia at the edge of the box and he moved it onto his left to open space and smashed across goal and wide.

Wellens overlapped Omari Forson and cut back into box for Charlie Savage coming in late and the midfielder opened up his body to direct the ball to the back post but it rolled just inches wide.

Just before the break United would pull one back, this time from a Palace turnover. A wayward pass from right-back Kaden Rodney went straight to Mejia and the forward slowed the play down waiting for support before laying off to Savage to come onto and side foot into the bottom left corner.

The whistle went shortly after with the score 1-2 going into the break. United were the dominant side in possession through the half but were unable to create many quality openings.

Immediately on the restart a great cross field pass from Bjorn Hardley found Forson on the right wing and he cut inside looking to curl to the back corner but couldn’t get enough whip on it.

It was Palace who would hit again first though. Wellens afforded too much space for Gordon to cut back onto his right foot and clip to the back post for two open Palace players who had krept in behind Hardley and Logan Pye to easily head into the goal from just two yards out.

It was disaster in the 53rd minute as a routine looping cross was spilled by Mee to gift a goal to Palace’s Killian Phillips and then the keeper lashed out by striking a Palace player with his forearm which he was lucky to get away with only a yellow for.

United look to respond with a beautifully curled in cross from Savage to Fish at the back post but Fish was muscled away from the ball’s path.
The match became one sided with Palace endlessly threatening United’s goal and came close to making it five in the 69th minute when they struck the crossbar twice in quick succession.

Noam Emeran came off the bench to inject some pace in United’s attack and got the better of his fullback to open the space and drill a ball across the six yard line but no teammate was alive to the ball and it was cleared.

Palace eventually would make it five late in the match from a corner. A flicked header at the front post could only be knocked in at the back post by Marc Jurado as he attempted to clear.

A poor start to the season with another heavy defeat, United youngsters will be looking to get back on track next Friday away to Everton.

United: Mee, Wellens, Fish, Hardley, Pye, Mainoo, Savage, Forson, Hansen-Aaroen (McNeill 66), Shoretire (Emeran 66), Mejia (Jurado 75)

Unused subs: Wooster, Fredricson

The post Charlie Wellens set for loan move to Crewe Alexandra appeared first on Man United News And Transfer News | The Peoples Person.

Manchester United’s Charlie Wellens is set to depart on loan to Crewe Alexandra according to Alan Nixon.

The 19-year-old has been a regular for Manchester United’s U-21s for the past year, notching 37 appearances at that level.

Typically featuring at right back, the youngster has supplied six assists and scored twice in that time, including a spectacular free kick goal in this season’s league opener against Arsenal yesterday.

But it now seems that will be the last time he features for the reserve team this season as Alan Nixon of The Sun has reported “the Red Devils are sending highly-rated defender Charlie Wellens to Crewe on loan.”

Currently sitting in second on the League Two table, Crewe have won both of their opening fixtures against Harrogate Town and Rochdale.

Having recently re-signed the experienced right back Kelvin Mellor, a former Crewe academy graduate, Wellens will be in for a fight to stake his claim for a spot in the first XI.

The youngster’s versatility could come in handy to earn playing time though, as he originally came through the ranks as a central midfielder and further forward as a right winger.

With over a year of reserves football under his belt, the move into senior football will be a good move for the academy player.

Always a solid performer, he is well-rounded in his play, both in terms of possession and defensively.

So whichever position it is at, Wellens’ work ethic and consistency will almost certainly see him become a regular for Alex Morris’ side.

The possible move will also see the United starlet come up against a member of the Wellens household.

Charlie’s father, Richie Wellens, is currently managing rivals and promotion hopefuls Leyton Orient, who have also opened their campaign with two victories.

(A score of 6 is around average)

Dermot Mee – 5 – Made some good saves. His play with the ball left a lot to be desired. Moved it too slowly out from the back and put a lot of teammates in dangerous positions such as for Arsenal’s third. When he did decide to go long, he rarely found a teammate.

Charlie Wellens – 7 – Scored a spectacular free kick that would have made David Beckham proud to give United the early lead. Was also strong defensively for the most part, making a lot of good defensive contributions but Charles Sagoe Jr did get the better of him on occasion.

Marc Jurado – 4.5 – Out of position on the left side, he had a monumental task against Arsenal’s 7, who caused him all sorts of trouble. Was in constant action, especially in the first half, and made some vital recovering tackles but ultimately 7 was too much to handle. Switched to right back after Pye came on and was much more comfortable in the last 20 minutes.

Tyler Fredricson – 5 – Dealt with a lot attacks but ultimately was dragged out of position on a few occasions and made some mistakes.

Bjorn Hardley – 5.5 – A solid display, in particular making a number of interceptions and vital tackles around the box.

Charlie Savage – 5 – Had to help Jurado a lot defensively and made some very good recovery challenges. Couldn’t stamp his control in possession which was also due to the backline’s inability to find him quickly enough. When he did receive the ball, he attempted too many balls over the top which just weren’t working.

Dan Gore – 4 – Almost invisible for most of the match, he was overrun in midfield and couldn’t make any impact. A strong challenge on him late on seemed to light a fire in him and he proceeded to fly into three perfectly timed tackles and chased back to stop a counter attack before being subbed off.

Omari Forson – 5 – Some good touches and passes but similar to those around him, he struggled to hold possession and didn’t seem to enjoy the intense and physical game Arsenal’s defenders were playing.

Isak Hansen-Aaroen – 6 – The only player for most of the match to have any ability to maintain possession. Looked to play some quick intricate passes but couldn’t find the final ball and often let down by teammates’ control. Came close to pulling one back late in the match with a great effort outside the box.

Mateo Mejia – 4 – Just wasn’t his day. Couldn’t get a hold of the ball as it bounced off him constantly and couldn’t handle the intensity and physicality of the Arsenal defenders at his back. Did make some really strong tackles working backwards though.

Charlie McNeill – 4.5 – Had one quality bit of play which produced a good effort but struggled to cause any trouble throughout the match. He didn’t have the strength to hold up the ball and didn’t have the pace to get onto balls in the channels.

Substitutes

Logan Pye – 6 – A solid twenty minutes, he moved the ball around well and wasn’t troubled defensively too much as Arsenal’s Marquinhos faded out of the match.

Kobbie Mainoo – 6 – Came on and added some much needed dynamism and physicality which helped the team maintain possession better.

Sam Mather – 6 – Only on for a short time but tried a clever free kick which came close to catching out the Arsenal keeper.

Manchester United’s u21s kicked off their campaign today away to Arsenal in a new look Premier League 2 as the league has changed from u23s to u21s.

United started the match with good passing play and worked the ball around the box from left to right before Omari Forson took a tame shot into the keeper’s arms.

A string of errors at the back with the ball from Dermot Mee and then Bjorn Hardley gifted Arsenal a huge chance but Hardley recovered to block an almost certain goal.

United cleared an Arsenal corner but the second ball in caught the backline out, leaving an Arsenal player in acres of space for a free header from 10 yards but he couldn’t leap high enough to get over the ball and looped it over the bar as a result.

In the 13th minute Charlie McNeill won a free kick 20 yards out. Charlie Wellens lined up the ball and curled it over the wall and into the top right corner giving the keeper no chance, a spectacularly taken goal.

A poor pass into Charlie Savage in the midfield saw possession turned over and Arsenal’s Matt Smith picked the up the ball and drove into box and shot wide of the left post.

Seconds later, Arsenal threatened again with a shot from long range that was parried out by Mee.

In the 25th, Arsenal raced in behind Wellens and cut back for Matt Smith to shoot but the attempt was straight at Mee who did well to hold onto the stinging ball.

It was becoming a one sided affair as Arsenal dominated the chances and United struggled to maintain any sort of possession. Frustration was beginning to set in and the skipper Savage could be heard exasperatedly saying “come on, that touch is sh-t” to Marc Jurado as he recovered for the defender’s mistake, mopping up the mess with a great tackle to win goal kick.

Arsenal’s new Brazilian signing, Marquinhos, was causing havoc for Jurado and ran in behind him again and this time it finally paid dividends as his shot was pushed by into a dangerous areas by Mee for Khayon Edwards to slide and poke into the net to draw the match level minutes before the half.

A minute later, Marquinhos was terrorizing Jurado again and cut back to tee up the strike for James Olayinka from 18 yards but the midfielder soared it out of the stadium.

The second half continued much as the first with Marquinhos the key danger man and within a minute of the restart he cut in from the right and smashed a shot that was blocked. But he was the liveliest to the breaking ball and slid it into the bottom left corner to give Arsenal the lead.

United continued to struggle playing out from the back as Mee played Savage into danger, causing a turnover of the ball and Arsenal were quick on it to play into the box for Miguel Azeez to double the lead in the 50th minute.

Just minutes later Arsenal hit on counter and Marquinhos got in behind on the right to cross to back post to Charles Sagoe Jr for an easy chance but he volleyed it into the stands.

In the 55th minute, Charlie McNeill and Forson combined to try force a turnover from Lino Sousa’s loose touch but the Arsenal man outmuscled and outpaced them both to hold onto the ball until McNeill hit out in frustration and picked up a yellow card.

United were finding a bit more momentum when Wellens played the ball into the channel for McNeill, who was able to hold the ball up for the first time. But he turned and played a tame pass across the box straight to the keeper.

The 67th minute saw a good switching pass from Savage to the right for Wellens to put in an early cross and it was great control from McNeill to bring the ball down and work the space for reverse a shot to the bottom left corner, but a top save tipped it round for a corner.

A few minutes later after a great bit of possession from United, the final ball from Isak Hansen-Aaroen was cut out and Arsenal hit long for the counter. Tyler Fredricson got caught under the ball trying to deal with it, allowing Sagoe Jr to steal in and run clean through on goal, but he struck wide.

The last 15 minutes saw United finally retaining the bulk of possession. After working it around the box, Hansen-Aaroen took a quick shot from 22 yards and hit the right post and out. Kobbie Mainoo looked to follow up on the loose ball, trying to drive through the box but after stumbling past two challenges he couldn’t get passed the third that pumped the ball clear.

In injury time, Sam Mather tried to catch the Arsenal keeper off guard from wide a free kick by curling it to the near post but he was quick across the goal and tipped it around the post.

The final whistle came shortly after with the final score a deserved 3-1 win for Arsenal.

United: Mee, Wellens (Pye 72), Fredricson, Hardley, Jurado, Savage, Gore (Mather 84), Forson, Hansen-Aaroen, Mejia (Mainoo 65), McNeill

Unused Subs: Harrison, Aljofree

Manchester United’s u23s travelled to Leicester on Monday night for league action in blustery conditions.

Leicester were on the front foot from the off with former United academy player Chris Popov turning in the box and testing Ondrej Mastny with a placed shot into the left corner that was well saved.

With Leicester controlling the opening stages, United’s first chance came in the 12th minute as Alejandro Garnacho drove into a bit of space and looked to place a low shot from 20 yards out that rolled just wide of the left post.

In the 16th minute, Leicester’s bombardment of United’s box led to the awarding of a harsh penalty. A cannon of a shot from the edge of the box smashed off of Bjorn Hardley’s arm and the ref was quick to point to the spot despite the defender having no time to dodge the ball.

Leicester’s skipper, Lewis Brunt, stepped up and slotted the penalty into the bottom left corner to give Leicester the lead.

Off the ball, Hannibal Mejbri went into the book in the 22nd minute for his far too common back talk to the referee.

The 25th minute saw Leicester’s corner kick held up in the wind a towering header crashed off the post but the whistle went for a push in the back.

Despite having the wind in the backs, United was struggling to get the ball out of their half.

Leicester doubled their lead in the 36th as they got in behind down the right and a low ball all the way across the box to the left side found Wanya Marcal-Madivadua with time and space to control and slot into the bottom right corner.

Three minutes later and Leicester struck again with a quick counter attack. Alvaro Fernandez almost cut out the initial pass but the ball broke back to Leicester and Sammy Braybrooke was teed up at the edge of the box to smash into the left corner.

After what must have been a strong half time talk from Neil Wood, United came out in the second half looking rejuvenated.

Within four minutes, United pulled one back with a bizarre goal. Noam Emeran drove down the right and switched play to Garnacho who’s cross was cleared only to Charlie Wellens at the edge of the box to strike off the left post and luck was in United’s favour as the ball bounced off Brunt and rolled into the goal.

In the 52nd minute a beautiful diagonal ball from Charlie Savage picked out Emeran marauding down the right wing before the Frenchman jinked past two defenders but couldn’t find the finish as he sliced it well wide.

The ref still wasn’t pleased with Hannibal’s dissent and issued a final warning to the midfielder and called over captain D’Mani Mellor to keep his teammate in line.

United grabbed their second in the 70th minute through Shola Shoretire. Fernandez found Hannibal inside the box and he turned and shot but it was cut out by Shoretire running into the six yard box who controlled and volleyed into the back of the net.

Soon after Dan Gore saw his introduction to the match and almost made an immediate impact striking the crossbar after Hannibal squared for him in the box.

Shoretire did well to hold off a challenge in the midfielder before slipping through Mellor on the right side but his front post shot was saved by the keeper.

Pressing for the equaliser until the end, United ultimately couldn’t find the net again and remain in fourth place.

Following the match, Neil Wood didn’t mince his words saying the players failed to follow the game pan in the first half and “individuals didn’t do their jobs properly and had no discipline.” But he was pleased with the second half response after being left frustrated and disappointed.

United: Mastny, Wellens, Fish, Hardley, Fernandez, Savage, Shoretire, Hannibal, Emeran (Gore 76), Mellor, Garnacho

Unused subs: Vitek, Jurado, Mejia, Fredricson

Jose Mourinho is targeting a swoop for Manchester United’s Charlie Wellens, according to a new report.

Interest from another former club of Mourinho’s, Tottenham Hotspur, is said to be rivalling Roma for Wellens’ signature.

A versatile player, Wellens has spent most of the past nine months at right-back but previously spent significant time as a right winger and central midfielder.

The Sun says “Mourinho is keen to bring Wellens to Roma after taking a shine to him during his spell at Old Trafford.”

Wellens “was brought into first-team training by Mourinho for experience” during the Portuguese manager’s time in Manchester.

A hard-working young player with a willingness to play across the pitch for the team, it is no surprise Wellens will have impressed Mourinho with his attitude.

With 17 appearances for United’s u23s this campaign, the youngster impressed the hierarchy enough to be added to Champions League B list before the Young Boys fixture but ultimately didn’t make the match day squad.

A strong stable of young right-backs at the club, including Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Diogo Dalot, Ethan Laird and Marc Jurado in the academy, means any path into the first team will not be easy though.

As a result, Wellens may be tempted by the offer of senior football elsewhere.

Mourinho has been consistently linked with another United right back, Diogo Dalot, but the 21-year-old’s recent breakthrough into regular first team action may have put him out of reach and forced the Roma boss to think again.

The son of another United academy product, Charlie’s father Richie Wellens forged a long and successful career at clubs such as Blackpool, Leicester City, and Doncaster Rovers after leaving Manchester United.

Following in his father’s footsteps, the young Wellens will be sure to look to his father for guidance on taking the next step in his career.

Whether that move will be to Rome to play under Jose Mourinho or not, Wellens is certainly entering the crossroads in his development where he looks for senior football.

Manchester United have added six youth players to the Champions League B-list squad ahead of the fixture vs. Young Boys tonight.

The squad already qualified for the last 16 in top place after winning the last fixture vs. Villarreal 2-0 in what was United’s first outing since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked.

Current interim manager Ralf Rangnick has already confirmed that there will be a lot of rotation in the starting eleven for the Young Boys tie because of the busy Christmas fixtures that are upon us.

United have played three games in eight days so it will be in the manager’s best interest to start a team of players that are lacking minutes this season, to see if they can force their way into the starting eleven for the rest of the season.

According to The Manchester Evening News, six players have been added to the Champions League B-list squad for the game, with five of them potentially making their competitive debuts tonight.

The players added to the list are defender Bjorn Hardley, midfielders Charlie Savage, Charlie Wellens, Sam Mather and Zidane Iqbal and forward Shola Shoretire.

Shoretire has already made his competitive debut earlier this year in February against Newcastle which followed up with a European Debut in March against Real Sociedad.

The United U-19’s have already qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Youth League so it is expected that fresher talents will be used in their corresponding tie, while some of the academy regulars make the first-team squad.

Most of the youngsters who have been added to the Champions League squad have been training with the first team for some time now.

Hardley has already trained with United this season after turning 18 with Wellens being called up to first-team training in September 2019.

Savage, who is the son of former Wales international Robbie Savage and Iqbal who is already regarded as an exciting prospect both turned professional earlier on in the year.

Our predicted starting XI for the tie is available here.
