Manchester United defender Bjorn Hardley has officially left the club to join FC Utrecht permanently.

In a statement released by United, Hardley’s departure to the Dutch giants is confirmed after a stint in the academy.

The announcement says “The 20-year-old joins the Eredivisie club having spent four years as part of United’s youth set-up.

“Hardley also returns to the country of his birth and will initially play for FC Jong Utrecht, FC Utrecht’s youth side.”

The Red Devils rounded off their statement by wishing the 20-year-old all the best for the future as he embarks on a new adventure away from Old Trafford.

He made the jump to United in 2019 after beginning his career with NAC Breda.

Last term, Hardley made appearances in the EFL Trophy and Premier League 2, managing just one goal in 27 games.

In total, he has played 85 times for the 20-time English champions, registering three goals.

The player represents the second United star to seal a permanent switch to FC Utrecht after the sale of Zidane Iqbal in a £850,000 deal.

Utrecht Technical Manager Tim Gilissen said about Hardley’s transfer, “Björn is a left-footed central defender with a lot of duel power.”

“He is a real winner, someone who does everything to get the best out of himself and his teammates.”

“He now consciously chooses this step in his career, to make playing minutes in the Kitchen Champion Division.”

Gilissen further stated, “In this competition, he wants to develop himself and we will do everything we can to help him with that. We are happy to be able to connect him to the club.”

]]>

With the January transfer window nearing a close, it is not only the time from incoming signings but also the reverse, as players head for the exit in search of playing time.

Recent weeks have already seen Shola Shoretire, Charlie Savage and Maxi Oyedele secure moves but below we look at a further five United players who should be looking to follow suit and very well may do so before the deadline.

Zidane Iqbal

Erik ten Hag has suggested Iqbal may stay at Old Trafford but the young midfielder would massively benefit from a spell away from the club.

Spending the season so far in limbo, Iqbal impressed in pre-season and earned a spot in first team training but has yet to make a single appearance.

Despite some recent cup matches against lower league opposition, Ten Hag opted to leave the Iraqi international on the bench against Charlton and didn’t even include him in the matchday squad for last night’s fixture with Reading.

As the season approaches the tail end with no easy fixtures, there looks to be little opportunity for Iqbal to be bedded in, especially as 17 year old Kobbie Mainoo has grabbed his chance to move ahead in the pecking order.

Making only nine appearances for the u21s this season, Iqbal is in desperate need of playing time at any level.

A technically skilled midfielder, dealing with the physicality and pace of the game has always been the 19 year old’s biggest struggle even during his time in the u18s.

Therefore, getting up to speed with senior football will take a good string of appearances which will only be possible with a loan. Due to his slow and technical style of play, Ten Hag’s connections in the Netherlands would provide the perfect training ground for the young midfielder.

Axel Tuanzebe

Having just returned to training from a lengthy injury, any move could be pushing it tight for the defender but should be sought.

Well down the pecking order of an already deep list of centre back options for Ten Hag, Tuanzebe has little future at United and is set to leave the club at the expiry of his contract in the summer.

At 25 Tuanzebe is still yet to reach 100 senior appearances after a string of injury lay-offs in recent years.

Unsuccessful loans at Aston Villa and Napoli last season mean that there is a danger that the centre back’s once glittering prospects are fizzling out.

As a result, a move to the Championship on loan or a permanent sale could be on the cards with interest previously touted from Watford.

Di’Shon Bernard

Another centre back who has had his injury struggles this season, Bernard returned to training in November. He has since made three appearances for the u21s and has been training with the first team at times.

Over the u21 age limit and not registered in the Premier League squad though, the youngster has little chance of making his way into Ten Hag’s plans even in the event of an injury crisis due to his ineligibility.

Bernard has already experienced two successful loans with the most recent coming with Hull City in the Championship last season. Another move looked likely in the summer but was scuppered by injury.

With his return to fitness now, a Championship move should be in his sights in the coming days and having been left out of the u21s match on Friday, signs suggest it may already be in the works.

Noam Emeran

Injury struggles have also been a regular feature of Noam Emeran’s time in Manchester.

Signing a new contract at the end of last season, a loan move in the summer was expected before he unfortunately suffered another injury setback.

Returning to full fitness at the end of October, Emeran has been a regular with the u21s since but having made his debut at the level over two years ago, the winger’s time has come to step into senior football.

Netting in style for the u21s on Friday, the 20 year old was reported to have had interest from Germany and his native France in the summer, but there has been no news in January.

But whether it is on the continent or down the leagues in England, a spell in senior football until the end of the season would benefit the young winger.

Bjorn Hardley

Last is Bjorn Hardley. The Dutch defender who is comfortable at centre back and left back has been a regular feature for the u21s for the past year and a half, notching up 46 appearances.

At 20 years old, Hardley is experienced at the u21s level but has yet to feature in senior football and a loan move would see spots open up in the u21s for the talented group of centre backs in the u18s to step into.

Strong in the air and cultured with the ball at his feet, the former NAC Breda defender would be a useful pickup for any progressive thinking manager in League One or possibly back in the Netherlands.

The Manchester Evening News report a loan move is possible, but there has been no news of a potential destination.

Manchester United’s u21s took on Brighton Hove and Albion in Premier League 2 action with a 3-3 draw as they continue to search for their first league win of the season. Here are our player ratings for the match:

To view a detailed match report, click here.

Radek Vitek – 8 – Kept United in the game with a remarkable double save early on and then followed it up with several more top notch saves throughout the match. Unfortunately, a poor decision to try run out and sweep a counter saw Brighton score easily for their third. But overall it was a good performance from the Czech keeper who is continuing to follow in the footsteps of Matej Kovar, who has also impressed as of late.

Marc Jurado – 6.5 – Had a tough time of it defensively in the first half but came out much improved in the second and got forward to good effect, coming close to scoring with a great effort.

Rhys Bennett – 6.5 – His passing was much improved today and he defended well for the most part.

Tyler Fredricson – 6.5 – Made a number of key interventions up against a strong opponent in Evan Ferguson but allowed too much space at times. On the ball he showed a good range of passing out from the back.

Bjorn Hardley – 7.5 – Was tested by Odeluga Offiah’s pace but stood up to the challenge and defended well. Also got forward often and grabbed the late equaliser.

Toby Collyer – 7 – Kept things tidy on the ball and did a good job of mopping up in midfield. Was also a constant danger on corners as Brighton couldn’t contend with his high leap in the box.

Charle Savage – 7.5 – A feisty display in midfield and got hold of the play especially in the second half as he sprayed the ball around to great effect. Unlucky not to get his name on the score sheet, hitting the post and forcing a number of good saves and blocks with his long range shooting.

Isak Hansen-Aaroen – 6 – A mixed bag of a performance as he impressed with a lot of intricate play and passes but also sloppily gifted away possession too often and failed to give support to Jurado defensively, particularly in the first half.

Kobbie Mainoo – 9 – A top performance from the 17 year old in a more advance role than usual. Offered good movement in the final third and capped off his display with two well taken goals.

Shola Shoretire – 6.5 – A match of moments as he was involved in all three goals with a delightful chipped cross for Hardley and the two corners for Mainoo’s brace but drifted through too much of the match and didn’t track back when playing as a left winger in the first half.

Charlie McNeill – 6.5 – A hard working display despite struggling with an illness that eventually saw him come off at the break. Didn’t have his shooting boots on today but created a good chance for Shoretire and was much more involved in play than usual this season.

Substitutes

Sam Mather – 6 – Provided some good intricate play at times but didn’t have a large impact.

Tom Huddlestone – 6.5 – Offer composure in the midfield and his strength allowed him to win possession high up the pitch a number of times to keep attacks alive.

Manchester United’s u21s hosted Brighton Hove and Albion this afternoon in search of their first league win of the season.

In the opening minutes a risky pass from Isak Hansen-Aaroen at the edge of box coughed up possession to create a huge chance for Brighton but a remarkable save from Radek Vitek denied the first effort and Andy Moran found himself with an open net on the rebound but couldn’t get his shot off quick enough as the sprawling Vitek flew across to save again.

In the 6th minute, there was a mistake up the other end as the Brighton defender played the ball straight to Charlie McNeill who ran into box but couldn’t get his shot off as he looked to cut onto his right.

Brighton’s danger man Evan Ferguson unleashed a bullet of a shot 10 yards out from the right that was well blocked by Tyler Fredricson.

18 minutes in, United thought they took the lead when McNeill chipped a perfectly placed ball into the box for Shola Shoretire running onto to head at goal but the keeper managed to get behind it and keep the score level.

A minute later Fredricson split Brighton’s backline with a ball over the top to Hansen-Aaroen, who took the ball down well and looked to slide under the keeper but a trailing leg kept the ball out and the follow up attempt was blocked for a corner.

The resulting corner was flicked on by a Brighton defender for the waiting Kobbie Mainoo to volley into the net to give United the lead.

Minutes later, Brighton hit the back of the net through Ferguson off a training ground corner but the celebration was short lived with the flag up for offside.

In the 29th minute, the Brighton left back got high up the pitch to find Ferguson in the box who laid off for Todd Miller to send into the roof of the net and equalise with an unstoppable shot.

United almost immediately responded with a long range effort from Charlie Savage pinging off the left post.

Mainoo was then played into the byline and cut back for McNeill to shoot from 12 yards out but he soared it over the goal.

The last play of the first half saw a good diagonal ball from Savage find Marc Jurado charging down the right but the right back’s stretching effort fizzled wide.

The teams went in level at the break and reemerged with Sam Mather making an introduction for Charlie McNeill who had been dealing with illness in recent days.

Early in the second half a deflected shot from Savage almost caught the keeper out but he recovered well to save.

Down the other end, a cross from the left found Jack Hinshelwood open to head from 6 yards out that was incredibly saved by Vitek to push out for a corner.

But from the corner United couldn’t clear after a number of attempts, allowing Antef Tsoungui to put the ball into the bottom right corner to give Brighton the lead.

In the 53rd minute, United responded from another corner. Shoretire’s ball in was tipped on by Toby Collyer into a crowd and Mainoo was quickest on it to strike into the net, past the flailing bodies toward him.

A good passing move starting off with Mather ended with Mainoo teeing up Shoretire at the edge of the box who looked to curl into the bottom corner but it went just inches wide.

Brighton countered in the 68th minute from a corner and Vitek charged 50 yards up the field for the loose ball but was easily bypassed by Ferguson to slot into an open net.

Mather slipped Shoretire into the right channel who clipped a hanging ball to the back post for Bjorn Hardley to head in from close range to bring the match level again in the 83rd minute.

It was all United in the latter stages and a terrific ball from Savage was taken down on the chest by Mainoo at the back post before squaring it back for Savage arriving late but his strike cannoned off the Brighton defender.

Moments later Savage’s shot was blocked again before it fell to Tom Huddlestone to lay off for Jurado, who cut back onto his left to get past two Brighton defenders and aimed for the far corner, forcing a finger tip save.

A string of three corners saw United coming close with Huddlestone having the best effort that was cleared on the line by the defender.

Despite United dominating the closing stages in search of a winner, the final whistle went 3-3 as United still look for their first league win of the season.

United: Vitek, Jurado, Bennett, Fredricson, Hardley, Collyer (Huddlestone 73), Savage, Hansen-Aaroen, Mainoo, Shoretire, McNeill (Mather 46)

Unused Subs: Mastny, Murray

]]>

With Manchester United’s pre-season kicking off in under four weeks, Erik Ten Hag will soon be taking his first hands on look at United’s squad.

A time of year highly anticipated by all youth prospects, United’s young players will be extra excited this year as they look to earn their breakthrough into the senior squad with a good first impression.

Here we will look at the youth players most likely to feature during the pre-season tour, starting with defenders.

Alvaro Fernandez

There is no need to look further than Manchester United’s u23s player of the season, Alvaro Fernandez.

The 19 year old Spaniard spent the latter stages of the season training with the first team under Ralf Rangnick but did not manage to make his debut despite being named on the bench on four occasions.

A classy player who plays with extreme elegance, Fernandez was the main driving force for United’s u23s throughout the season, picking up four goals and six assists in all competitions.

Almost a certainty to feature during the pre-season tour, the left back is the most likely youth defender to stand out and make a big impression on Ten Hag. Clever in possession and often looking to drift infield, Fernandez fits the mould of full back often deployed by the new manager.

The youngster’s main weakness of lacking top speed is also unlikely to be a deterrent considering Ten Hag’s fondness for Daley Blind, who also lacks the speed of the conventional fullback.

A spot may perfectly open up in the first team for the Denzil Haroun player of the year as well, due to Luke Shaw’s injury history and question marks surrounding Alex Telles’ future.

Ethan Laird

Seen by most youth followers as almost a certainty to make it into the first team if he can get over his injury problems, unfortunately his January move to Bournemouth on loan was scuppered by the return of a long standing hamstring injury.

Before that though, Laird had enjoyed an injury free year under Russell Martin at MK Dons and Swansea City. Utilised in a high positioned right wing back role under Martin, he was able to provide four assists at both MK Dons and Swansea.

Having demonstrated his ability to attack, the defensive side of his game is still questionable as he was given little responsibility in the way of defending.

Hoping that will be enough to catch Ten Hag’s eye, Laird is also bolstered by the fact that right back is a major weakness in United’s squad. With Aaron Wan-Bissaka reported to be on the way out and Diogo Dalot not setting the world alight, there is a free run at the spot if Laird can impress during pre-season.

Laird’s pre-season performances and any potential moves in the transfer market will dictate if he will be in Ten Hag’s squad for the season or will seek another loan.

Teden Mengi
Having captained United through the age groups, Mengi is the most likely centre back to feature on the tour.

But he is another talented defender held back by injuries, Mengi’s loan spell with Birmingham was cut short after only 10 appearances when he picked up a season-ending injury and returned to United early.

A strong and quick centre-back, Mengi has the physical qualities suitable for English football but has yet to overcome his concentration issues. Standing at only 1.86m, he also is not the strongest aerially but Ten Hag’s previous use of shorter centre backs means this may not be a problem.

Di’Shon Bernard

Often overshadowed by his teammates, Bernard has quietly gone about his development with impressive loan spells at Salford City and Hull City.

Making 28 appearances at Hull last campaign, Bernard had solidified himself as a regular starter for the Championship side and won Player of the Month for October. Unfortunately, a change in management late in the season saw Bernard fall out of favour come the end of the season.

A strong centre back who is tough in the challenge, he also enjoys a venture forward and would often be deployed as a striker late in matches during his time with United u18s.

His involvement on tour is likely to depend on the situations of Phil Jones and Eric Bailly, who if still at the club will likely take places over Bernard.

An exit from Old Trafford may be on the cards with either another loan move or a permanent move for something more stable due to the numbers ahead of him in United’s squad.

Will Fish

An extremely talented centre back, Fish made his u23s debut at only 16, before being made the side’s captain at 17.

Seen as a top talent coming through the ranks at United and for England’s youth set up, Fish is coming off the back of a rather disappointing season. A five month loan spell with Stockport County saw the 19 year old pick up a man of the match accolade on his debut but he would only see eight more minutes of action on loan before returning to United in January.

Slotting back into United’s u23s, Fish had a decent end to the season but not to the heights of previous years.

A timid defender, Fish often lacks aggression in his play but makes up for it with his intelligence in reading the game, strong aerial prowess and ability on the ball.

With Ten Hag often favouring less physical centre backs in the past, he may prefer Fish’s more modern defending style.

Bjorn Hardley

An outside shot of being involved, Hardley will be hoping for some favouritism from his Dutch compatriot.

An ever present for United’s u23s, Hardley is a solid centre back who is good in the air and has a large range of passing in his repertoire but can lack anticipation in his defending.

As the only left footed centre back at the club though, this uniqueness may cause Ten Hag to give him a closer look. But another year in the u23s is the most likely outcome.

Manchester United’s u23s hosted Chelsea at Old Trafford last night in PL2 action.

The side saw two changes from the last outing as Martin Svidersky replaced the injured Charlie Savage and Zidane Iqbal came in for Hannibal Mejbri.

Chelsea created the first chance of the match as Dion Rankine raced down the right and centred for Joe Haigh, who shot over the bar one time.

D’Mani Mellor’s pressing created a big chance in the 7th minute as he stole the ball from the unassuming defender and moved the ball onto his left foot before looking to bend it into the far corner but he didn’t get the desired curve on it, sending the ball high and wide.

In the 14th minute, a long ball into the box from Will Fish wasn’t cleared properly and the ball fell to Mellor for a quick shot which he got the full leather behind but it was right at the keeper. The amount of power behind the shot would have been a certain goal if it had gone either side.

Dion Rankine caused trouble again with his pace as he ran at Svidersky and cut onto his left before unleashing a low drilled shot but Ondrej Mastny got down quickly to save.

Alvaro Fernandez played a great cross-field ball to Noam Emeran in space on the right and the winger slipped in the overlapping Charlie Wellens who struck but the keeper had his angles covered.

United took the lead in the 35th after Mellor’s relentless pressing forced a mistake from Bashir Humphreys who slipped allowing Mellor to steal and square to Alejandro Garnacho to tap in.

United went into the break leading by a goal to nil having been the better side playing at a higher pace and intensity that Chelsea couldn’t match.

The start of the second half saw a change in formation for Chelsea as they switched to match United’s three at the back.

Emeran came close with a free-kick attempt from 20 yards but a finger-tipped save onto the bar from Lucas Bergstrom denied the French winger.

The resulting corner saw United play it short for Wellens to clip a ball into a soaring Shola Shoretire in the middle to latch onto but his header was too close to the keeper.

In the 69th, Emeran squared out wide for Fernandez and the fullback cut inside onto his before firing towards the bottom left corner that was tipped round the post for a corner.

United tried to catch Chelsea off guard with a quick corner playing a low ball to the front post for Mellor to flick on but the keeper was alert and palmed over the bar.

Chelsea threatened late on when Svidersky was forced to cover out the left and was beat for pace by Josh Brooking but he didn’t give up and got back to make a fantastic sliding block to stop the cross.

A last-second corner for Chelsea saw the keeper called up and Brooking’s looping header came agonizingly close but it landed on top of the net.

The final whistle went shortly after sealing a much-deserved win for United and sees them stay in fourth place.

Manager Neil Wood was full of praise after the match for the backline and singled out Will Fish, Bjorn Hardley, and Svidersky saying they “defended the box well and they were excellent.”

At the other end of the pitch, Wood wasn’t impressed with the finishing but did praise the efforts of Mellor who he stated “never stops working and is so unselfish with his work. It’s a full team effort but he plays a big part in that.”

United: Mastny, Fish, Hardley, Svidersky, Wellens, Shoretire (Stanley 85), Iqbal, Fernandez, Emeran, Mellor, Garnacho (Gore 90)

Manchester United have added six youth players to the Champions League B-list squad ahead of the fixture vs. Young Boys tonight.

The squad already qualified for the last 16 in top place after winning the last fixture vs. Villarreal 2-0 in what was United’s first outing since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked.

Current interim manager Ralf Rangnick has already confirmed that there will be a lot of rotation in the starting eleven for the Young Boys tie because of the busy Christmas fixtures that are upon us.

United have played three games in eight days so it will be in the manager’s best interest to start a team of players that are lacking minutes this season, to see if they can force their way into the starting eleven for the rest of the season.

According to The Manchester Evening News, six players have been added to the Champions League B-list squad for the game, with five of them potentially making their competitive debuts tonight.

The players added to the list are defender Bjorn Hardley, midfielders Charlie Savage, Charlie Wellens, Sam Mather and Zidane Iqbal and forward Shola Shoretire.

Shoretire has already made his competitive debut earlier this year in February against Newcastle which followed up with a European Debut in March against Real Sociedad.

The United U-19’s have already qualified for the knockout stages of the UEFA Youth League so it is expected that fresher talents will be used in their corresponding tie, while some of the academy regulars make the first-team squad.

Most of the youngsters who have been added to the Champions League squad have been training with the first team for some time now.

Hardley has already trained with United this season after turning 18 with Wellens being called up to first-team training in September 2019.

Savage, who is the son of former Wales international Robbie Savage and Iqbal who is already regarded as an exciting prospect both turned professional earlier on in the year.

Our predicted starting XI for the tie is available here.

While the first team were in action against Everton, the u23s were playing host to their own Merseyside opposition in fierce rivals Liverpool.

As with most fixtures against Liverpool, the match started quick with a strong intensity.

United’s early spells came from the wing play of Shola Shoretire and Alvaro Fernandez and the former came close to opening the scoring twice.

First, Shoretire went for the audacious acrobatic effort and later forced another fantastic save with a driven low shot.

Liverpool also came close with efforts from Jack Bearne and Tyler Morton putting Matej Kovar to the test.

The deadlock was finally broken by Bjorn Hardley, who had ventured forward into Liverpool’s box and struck from close range in the 21st minute.

The end-to-end nature of the match continued but United started to get the better of the chances.

United were pushing for the second when they came agonisingly close through Anthony Elanga, who hit the inside of the post, and then Charlie Savage’s effort, which sailed just inches wide a moment later.

Half time was drawing near when Elanga scored a remarkable free-kick from an unreal position out on the left wing. His curled effort had everyone standing still as it bypassed the congested area and found the far corner.

The second half kicked off in similar manner with United looking the more threatening side.

After a spell of controlling possession and bombarding Liverpool’s goal, United finally notched a third goal through a wonderful strike by Shoretire.

Up 3-0 and in control of the match, United were looking to cruise to victory but in typical Liverpool fashion the dirty side of the game was still to be seen.

An awful challenge from Liverpool’s Dom Corness saw straight red after he clattered through Martin Svidersky who was fortunately able to continue on.

United: Kovar; Wellens, Mengi, McShane (Bennett 72), Hardley; Svidersky, Savage; Shoretire, Iqbal (McNeill 63), Fernandez (Emeran 90); Elanga.

Substitutes: Mee, Hoogewerf.

Scorers: Hardley 21, Elanga 45+1, Shoretire 62

Manchester United’s u23s were away to Everton in what is typically a fiery encounter and this occasion was no different.

United started the match quickly, opening the scoring in just the second minute of the match.

Charlie Wellens started the attack by stretching the play out to the right to Dillon Hoogewerf who cleverly played Shola Shoretire into the box.

Shoretire’s composed cut back left the Everton defender on the ground allowing him the time to pick out the onrushing Anthony Elanga who tucked home to make it 0-1.

The match slowed down following the early goal, with Everton sitting deep allowing United to control the match.
Similar to the first team, United’s u23s struggled to break down Everton’s compact defence despite controlling the match.

Everton looked to hit on the counter but caused little threat to United with Teden Mengi mopping up Everton’s long balls.

Nearing the break, Mengi charged through the middle of the pitch and was hit with a blow to the head which would force him off at halftime.

After the restart, Everton looked to take a more attacking approach but it was United who first came close with a free-kick from Elanga which forced an excellent full-stretch save from Everton keeper Jack Barrett.

Everton looked to test United’s resolve with aerial balls into the box but Matej Kovar proved up to the task as he commanded the area and held onto every ball that came his way.

With Everton gaining control, the introduction of Joe Hugill offered United a threat on the counter-attack.

First getting in down the left from a good ball through from Alvaro Fernandez, Hugill squared the ball, looking for Noam Emeran but it was cut out with a great last ditch clearance.

Hugill followed this up with a chance for himself as he was denied from a tight angle.

Chaos ensued as the match neared its final minutes when a melee broke out after Elanga pushed Charlie Whitaker who retaliated by throwing the ball at Elanga.

A full team brawl then ensued with shirt grabbing and pushing from both sides. As the dust settled the ref showed three red cards to Everton’s Whitaker and United’s Elanga and Bjorn Hardley for his involvement in the encounter after he looked to have hit Whitaker in the face.

Shortly after, the final whistle was blown and United walked away with the full three points, although celebrations were tempered following the two red cards.

United: Kovar; Wellens, Mengi (McShane 46), Hardley, Fernandez; Svidersky, Savage; Hoogewerf (Emeran 69), Shoretire, Iqbal (Hugill 69); Elanga.
Unused Substitutes: Mee, Mainoo.

Manchester United’s U23s won the three points in their league encounter away to Everton after a 0-1 victory. Here are our player ratings for the match:

(A score of 6 is around average)

Matej Kovar – 7.5 – Had hands like glue and was catching everything. A very commanding performance in his box and kept the clean sheet.

Charlie Wellens – 7 – A very solid display defensively and played the ball out of the back very well including starting off the attack for the only goal.

Teden Mengi – 7.5 – A rock at the back and utilised his pace and strength to deal with Everton’s balls over the top with ease. A good performance on the ball as well and unfortunately received a head injury after a surging run which forced him off early.

Bjorn Hardley – 6.5 – Left Mengi and McShane to take control at the back but was solid when called upon and tough in the challenge making some strong tackles. Sent off near the end for his involvement in the melee.

Alvaro Fernandez – 7 – Troubled very little defensively and started off a number of attacks with his dribbling and incisive passing. Had some unusually sloppy moments though on the ball with his passing.

Martin Svidersky – 6.5 – Strong defensively but could offer more on the ball.

Charlie Savage – 7 – Controlled the midfield with his passing and puts himself about physically despite his smaller stature.

Zidane Iqbal – 5 – A bit of an invisible man on the night and rarely got involved. Hugged the touchline on the right when the ball was central but then came central when the ball was on the right.

Shola Shoretire – 7 – A great bit of composure to cutback and sit down the defender before sliding in Elanga for the goal. Was at the centre of most attacks and created some opportunities but ultimately couldn’t breakthrough Everton’s defensive block more.

Anthony Elanga – 7 – Lively in the box to get the opening goal early in the game. Caused troubles with his runs and workrate and forced a stretching save from a free kick. Sent off at the end of the game for starting the big physical altercation.

Substitutes

Joe Hugill – 7 – A great performance off the bench making numerous runs in behind the Everton defence and held the ball up really well. Showed clever footwork and played some dangerous balls across the box but couldn’t find a teammate.

Paul McShane – 6 – Was troubled a bit more than Mengi by Everton’s pace and pressuring but managed to deal with it in the end.

Noam Emeran – 5.5 – A rusty performance after his long lay-off with injury struggles with loose passing and decision making but his liveliness and eagerness to get involved is encouraging.
