Manchester United had a turbulent summer that included making a decision on the immediate future of Mason Greenwood.

The forward, who hadn’t featured for United since the January of 2022, was shipped out on a season-long loan to Spanish side Getafe.

Greenwood has settled in well the southern region of Madrid, performing steadily for Getafe as he attempts to work his way back to form.

Given the 22-year-old’s impressive performances, talk on his long-term future has naturally resurfaced.

As reported by Football Transfers, Fabrizio Romano has provided the latest on the forward with La Liga sides impressed by his adaptation to Spanish football.

“We had some rumours about Getafe (being) already prepared to bid for Mason Greenwood, to have him long-term. [We also had rumours] about other clubs in Spain, including Valencia and others, thinking about the possibility to bid for Mason Greenwood,” said Romano.

The transfer guru also gave an update from the United side and the thoughts of incoming co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe who is set to take control of the sporting structure at Old Trafford.

“Sir Jim Ratcliffe already discussing internally about the situation of Greenwood. From what I’m told, he has made no decision at all about Greenwood now and nothing will be decided in December.

The idea is to take some time and then in 2024 – probably in March, in April, in May, not in the January transfer window – the idea will be to discuss the position of Mason Greenwood, also based on his performances for Getafe, based on many different factors,” says Romano.

Despite Erik ten Hag’s current crop crying out for a player in the mould of Greenwood, it would be a major surprise to see him return and play for the club again.

Given the supporter reaction to the rumours of integrating Greenwood into the squad in the summer, Ratcliffe will be well aware of the backlash he could face by bringing the player back.

However, United will hope his strong form in Spain continues in order to give them the best chance of commanding a decent fee for the disgraced star.

A host of Spanish sides are thought to be interested in securing Mason Greenwood’s services this summer, according to a report by The Sun.

The British tabloid contends the forward will find himself at the centre of a “summer transfer flurry” in La Liga, after impressing in the first few months of his loan to Getafe.

Two goals and three assists in ten league games has put Spanish clubs on notice with the quality of his most recent strike particularly eye-catching.

Both Valencia and Real Sociedad are both thought to be “monitoring” Greenwood with a view to making a move once his current loan deal has expired, though this interest is expected to rise should the 22-year old’s performances continue their current trajectory.

Getafe are hopeful of keeping the forward, however, who has become something of a sensation amongst the club’s fanbase. Getafe officials are reportedly targeting April as a deadline to initiate further talks with their Old Trafford counterparts over Greenwood’s future beyond this season.

As explained in greater detail elsewhere by The Peoples Person, Greenwood has settled well into life in South Madrid, enjoying both the lack of overt media presence, as well as the relatively low pressure environment of Getafe.

The coaching staff also appear to be managing the forward’s minutes in a carefully mediated manner, enabling Greenwood to build up his fitness slowly and deliberately. They reportedly expect his fitness to reach optimal levels by January.

The Sun reports the words of a source who reveals how happy both the player and his newly adopted club are with his initial few months in Spain.

“Mason has done brilliantly since he moved to Spain and is really catching the eye after a strong start to his time at Getafe. There are a number of clubs looking at him in Spain with scouts from Valencia and [Real] Sociedad seemingly at the front of the queue.”

“It is highly unlikely Mason will return to Manchester United. That ship has sailed, and he looks set to enjoy the next phase of his career in Spain where he has really settled and found his feet both personally and professionally.

“He owes a huge debt to Getafe for the help and support they have given him, and it’s possible he could make his move there permanent at the end of the season. But if he carries on playing like he is, other bids and offers are likely to come in, leaving Mason, and the club, with a decision to make.”

Greenwood will have one year remaining on his contract with United come the summer, though the club reserves the right to extend this by a further twelve months. Such a move may reignite the controversy which saw Old Trafford officials hastily reverse their ill-advised decision to try to reintegrate Greenwood into Erik ten Hag’s squad, however.

As such, a clean break in the summer with a permanent move to La Liga appears the most logical and palatable option for both parties. Which team in Spain Greenwood joins remains less obvious, given the attention the forward appears to be generating across the league.

]]>

The controversial Mason Greenwood has made a positive start to his loan at Getafe and is very comfortable with his new adventure in the Spanish capital.

This is according to The Athletic, who have lifted the lid on Greenwood’s first few months as a La Liga player.

The piece opens with the fact that the 27th of November 2023 was supposed to be Greenwood’s trial date in the case of domestic abuse and attempted rape. However, in a whirlwind few months, charges were dropped back in early 2023, subsequently, Manchester United held a much-maligned internal investigation and eventually after an embarrassing U-turn, Greenwood was exiled to Spain.

The decision makers at the club had already decided to re-integrate the player into the squad but after leaking the information, they faced such an intense backlash from fans, charities and politicians alike, that they thought twice and decided it was for the best to send the player away on a season-long loan. Getafe were the club who took the chance on deadline day.

The Athletic state that while the player has not hit the heights of his time at United, he “has scored four goals and got three assists in 720 minutes in league and cup, including a thunderous effort from the corner of the box on Saturday against Almeria”. The forward also contributed an incredible assist for Borja Mayoral in a previous game where he dribbled past three players.

The publication also claims that Getafe don’t believe they will see the best of the Englishman until after Christmas as he builds up fitness and form. The England international last played for Manchester United on the 22nd of January 2022 and had not played a first team game until September 2023.

The outlet states that while Greenwood is considered shy and even an introvert, he is slowly adapting to the jokes and banter of his new Spanish and South American teammates. His new club, Getafe, were insistent that the player took Spanish lessons, so he is now doing that.

The article goes on to state that, “on a personal level, he is happy in Madrid with his partner and daughter, as well as with the weather, food and house they have. There has been relatively little media pressure”. Compare this to the firestorm of media pressure he would be facing in the United Kingdom if he were back at United or another English club. The player has even felt able to get back to using social media, something unthinkable in the summer.

Greenwood himself is also incredibly popular with the local fans. His arrival at the club was met with celebration, where fans screamed every time he touched the ball in his first training session, which was intentionally made open to the public. In fact, “at Getafe’s 16,500-capacity Estadio Coliseum home, fans of all ages are regularly seen wearing his shirt”.

The Madrid-based outfit are delighted with him and plan to talk to United in April to work out a deal to make the arrangement permanent. However, as expected, Greenwood has faced abuse from fans of other teams including Osasuna and Athletic Bilbao, where supporters have greeted him with “whistles and shouts of, Greenwood, die!”. However, it does seem quite tepid in comparison to the torrent of abuse he would be experiencing at every stadium in England, most likely by large sections of Old Trafford too.

Manchester United for their part, continue to follow the 22-year-old striker’s progress with interest. They watch his games remotely on video and even sent a support team to help the player to settle into new life in the Iberian country.

There is the other fascinating factor of what soon-to-be new part owners of the club, INEOS, decide to do. Once they assume control of football operations it will be their problem. The Athletic argues that their decision will boil down to two choices, reintegrate the player back into the first team after his loan ends or sell him. The player’s deal ends in 2025 and the Mancunian club have the option to extend it for a year to protect his value. This may draw many unwanted questions, however.

If United even give a whiff that there is a possibility of Greenwood returning it will most likely be met with the same fierce opposition the idea received back in the summer. The confusion comes from the statement the club gave back in August.

After their U-turn, United’s statement said there are “difficulties” with Greenwood “recommencing his career” at the club and that it “would be most appropriate for him to do so away from Old Trafford”.
However, that same statement exonerated Greenwood of any guilt, saying, “We have concluded… Mason did not commit the offences in respect of which he was originally charged”, and the club did not completely rule out a return.

Nonetheless, the publication finishes with the opinion that it is expected that the Old Trafford outfit will try to sell the player once his loan at Getafe ends.

While United may be tempted to bring back the player if his form continues to improve in Spain and their own players continue to struggle, it is seemingly unlikely INEOS will want the headache. The new part-owners already have an almighty task on their hands to try and win over fans exhausted and sceptical from years of Glazer malaise. Bringing Greenwood back is not likely a good way to start.

Manchester United’s Mason Greenwood has been on a journey of career rehabilitation at Getafe following a series of legal challenges and internal backlash at his home club.

The young forward faced charges of attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behaviour, which he denied.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service dropped these charges due to the withdrawal of key witnesses.

Despite the charges being discontinued, United conducted an internal investigation regarding Greenwood.

Originally planning to reintegrate him into their first-team squad, the club faced criticism and internal backlash, leading to their decision to loan him to Getafe.

This move marked a significant turn in the striker’s career, as he had not played for United since a match against West Ham in January of the previous year.

At Getafe, a mid-table La Liga team, Greenwood has been working hard to regain his form. Under the guidance of head coach Jose Bordalas, he underwent a ‘mini pre-season’ to reach maximum fitness.

Though he initially played as a substitute, Greenwood has started contributing more significantly, scoring four goals and providing three assists in 720 minutes across league and cup matches.

Despite his on-field progress, his presence at Getafe has not been without controversy.

Some fans of rival teams have expressed their displeasure, yet Greenwood has been gradually integrating into the team and Spanish culture, even taking Spanish lessons.

Getafe and its fans have shown support for him, with many fans sporting his jersey and celebrating his contributions.

The club is considering discussing Greenwood’s future with Man United in April, indicating a potential interest in extending his stay in Spain.

United continues to monitor his progress, providing support when necessary.

However, with INEOS potentially becoming part-owners of United, Greenwood’s future remains uncertain.

The club’s previous decision to move Greenwood away from Old Trafford suggests a permanent transfer might be more likely than a return to United.

The noise around Mason Greenwood is set to reach a crescendo after the Manchester United loanee put in a world-class performance again.

Starting for Getafe against Almeria, Greenwood scored a wondergoal and was involved throughout in Getafe’s best attacking moments in their victory.

Before being subbed off in the 89th minute as Getafe sought to save their one-goal advantage, Greenwood was the brightest spark in the team.

It started off in the 33rd minute when Getafe were trailing against La Liga’s bottom team at the point.

Greenwood picked up the ball in the right half-space and unleashed a drive into the far corner to bring them back level.

The goal set social media ablaze but even beyond that, his attacking footprints were all over the game.

He had 47 touches of the ball as his role was to mainly stay up top and influence the game with his attacking talents, something he did perfectly.

He played one key pass, again, from that right half-space where he could cut in and use his left foot to create chances.

He completed 23/30 passes as he was the one mainly at the end of the attacking moves instead of playing as an orchestrator. (Stats courtesy of Sofascore)

As he has got his match fitness back, the signs of the old Mason Greenwood, the player, have started coming back.

This game was the perfect summation of his comeback as he played the full 90, had a goal contribution, and was a thorn in the opposition’s defence throughout, producing a jaw-dropping moment.

United supporters are undoubtedly following every move of his but it is more a case of “What if” as it is unlikely that he ever plays for the club again, regardless of his on-pitch contribution and ability.

Manchester United’s loanees are normally on loan because they’re not deemed ready for the scrutiny of Old Trafford’s lights.

However, Mason Greenwood is a special case, as the forward is not likely to be away from scrutiny even though he plays for Getafe in La Liga.

The player himself has just got himself back in the limelight for all the right reasons by scoring a ridiculous goal for Getafe vs Almeria.

With his team trailing 0-1 in the 32nd minute, Greenwood picked up the ball in the inside right channel.

United fans were getting used to what happens next when the forward is allowed space there and Getage fans witnessed it first-hand.

Greenwood cut inside, and while still outside the box, unleashed a venomous drive with his left foot that nestled straight into the far corner to draw Getafe level.

The shot was of such ferocity that the ball could barely be seen once it left Greenwood’s foot.

Buoyed by the goal, Getafe piled on the pressure and through Borja Mayoral, turned the game on its head within the first half, leading 2-1.

At the time of writing, Getafe held onto the lead after an hour had passed in the game.

Having gained enough match fitness by featuring regularly for the La Liga side, Greenwood is also playing 90 minutes more often than not.

His form warrants the same and while it’s unlikely that he ever plays for United again considering the circumstances he left in, he is undoubtedly making sure United could regret their decision, if only in terms of his on-pitch ability.

Getafe’s next game is against Las Palmas on December 1 and barring any injury issue, Greenwood is now one of the first names on the teamsheet.

Despite the charges against Mason Greenwood being dropped, he is still not an asset multi-billion dollar organisations want themselves associated with.

It was seen when Manchester United were forced to make a U-turn from their initial stance of bringing him back after public uproar.

Now, Nike has had to give out another update on their former client.

Greenwood recently put up a picture of himself wearing Nike trainers through a social media post.

The speculation went rampant and murmurs arose as to whether Greenwood had been re-signed by the sportswear giant.

However, Nike were quick to put a stop to the flame spreading any further with a comment to The Sun.

The Sun reported that a Nike spokesperson told them Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete.

Furthermore, the company stressed that they had no relationship of any kind with the Getafe forward on loan from United.

Nike cancelled Greenwood’s contract with them after the charges initially appeared in 2022 and he was also removed from video games as a result.

Since then, the charges have been dropped and he has been reinstated in video games like Football Manager and eFootball.

However, a company the size of Nike are clearly still reticent to associate themselves publicly with what could be a public relations disaster.

On the sporting side, Greenwood has been impressing for Getafe after a slow start in Spain, regularly putting in impactful performances on loan.

It is unlikely that he ever returns to United though such were the circumstances he left the club in.

Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood registered another assist for Getafe teammate Borja Mayoral during Getafe’s 1-1 draw against Granada.

Getafe broke the deadlock just two minutes into the game.

Greenwood embarked on a brilliant run from the left-hand side which saw him leave a rival player in his wake before putting the ball on a silver platter for Mayoral.

Mayoral tapped it in to give his side the lead.

However, Granada restored parity just before the break through Gonzalo Villar. The match ended in stalemate with both sides sharing the spoils.

Greenwood’s assist vs. Granada means that the Englishman now has three goals and as many assists in 10 appearances across all competitions for Getafe.

He also managed an assist during Getafe’s last clash vs. Cadiz – a match in which Paul Mitchell who could be United’s next sporting director was in attendance for.

He is certainly finding his feet in Spain and settling in well.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person revealed that José Bordalás’ side have been left impressed by the United loanee’s impact at Estadio Coliseum and are keen on making his stay permanent.

Getafe are hopeful of convincing United to completely part ways with their academy graduate.

During the 87 minutes he was in action against Granada, Greenwood had 35 touches of the ball to his name.

He successfully delivered 17 of the 21 passes he attempted, amassing a pass accuracy of 81%. Two were key passes.

The 22-year-old tried to find his target with four crossing attempts but was successful just once. He also tried one long ball and failed.

Greenwood created one big chance and registered as many shots on target.

He embarked on two dribbles and came out on top once. He also delved into six ground duels and won two of these.

(Stats obtained from Sofascore)

Up next for Getafe after the November international break is Almeria on 25 November.

Getafe are interested in holding talks with Manchester United in a bid to permanently sign Mason Greenwood.

Greenwood joined Getafe from United on a loan basis on transfer deadline day. This came after it was announced he will likely not play for the Red Devils again. He was arrested last year and subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive control. He denied all the allegations.

In February this year, the Crown Prosecution Service released a statement confirming that all charges against Greenwood had been dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses from the case.

United then launched their own internal investigation into the matter and had provisionally planned for his return but when the club’s plot was leaked, Old Trafford chiefs led by CEO Richard Arnold were forced to perform a U-turn, prompting the player’s loan move to Getafe.

Greenwood is currently enjoying life in Spain and is gradually rebuilding his career which had stalled.

In ten games across all competitions this season for Getafe, he has managed an impressive three goals and three assists.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person noted that Paul Mitchell – who is under strong consideration to take over as United’s sporting director once Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s partial investment becomes official – was present to watch the Englishman in action against Cadiz.

According to The Sun, Getafe have been left hugely impressed by Greenwood’s impact since his arrival at Estadio Coliseum and are planning to make his stay permanent.

It’s understood that José Bordalás’ side have “turned on the charm” to persuade the 21-year-old his future lies with them and not United.

A source told The Sun, “Getafe have discussed trying to get United round the table so they can make an offer, which they believe could be attractive to United to get Mason off their wage bill.”

“The likelier option is United agree for the loan to be extended as they know that Mason is happy and rebuilding his life.”

“They know he needs to grow up and want him to do so — and so far the Getafe loan has worked out well for everyone.”

Manchester United’s potential next sporting director, Paul Mitchell was in attendance during Getafe’s win against Cadiz on Monday.

It has been widely indicated that as Sir Jim Ratcliffe closes in on a partial 25% investment into United, he has identified possible key personnel to spearhead his vision at Old Trafford, with Mitchell being among them.

The INEOS billionaire’s proposal is entirely contingent on being granted sporting control.

He is keen to oversee a change of structure and operations at United, with a view to restoring the club’s past glories and bringing back success on the pitch.

Alongside Mitchell, it’s understood that former Juventus CEO Jean-Claude Blanc is also under strong consideration for a top job at United, with Richard Arnold’s future not secure.

A recent report covered by The Peoples Person suggested that Sir Jim could start work at United as soon as next week when an official announcement could be made.

The Daily Star reports that Mitchell was present as Mason Greenwood’s Getafe won by one goal to nil against Cadiz at Estadio Coliseum.

Greenwood came up with an assist for Borja Mayoral’s all-important goal that secured the victory and clinched all three points for Getafe.

The English forward now has three goals and two assists in nine appearances across all competitions for the Spanish outfit this season.

As per the Daily Star, Mitchell was spotted by cameras while Greenwood was in action for his loan side.

The Carrington academy graduate of course joined Getafe after it was announced he will likely not play for United again. He was arrested last year and subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault and coercive control. He denied all the allegations.

In February this year, the Crown Prosecution Service stated that all charges against Greenwood had been dropped due to the withdrawal of key witnesses from the case.
