As the whole footballing world eagerly anticipates the 191st Manchester derby, it is always therapeutic to look back at some of our fondest memories from these titanic tussles. Here are the top five United moments selected by The Peoples Person.

5. January 2012: City 2-3 United

It is the 8th January 2012, the third round of the FA Cup has been incredibly unkind and drawn Manchester United away to their cross city rivals. This 3-2 victory for the Red Devils was memorable for two reasons. The first was the surprise return of Paul Scholes, who made his way out of retirement for this game.

The second was vanquishing the ghosts of the previous October’s 6-1 humiliation at the hands of United’s noisy neighbours. The performance itself was nothing out of the ordinary, but it is a results business and getting the result is what United did.

4. 2010 EFL Semi-final second leg: United 2-1 City

Moment number four remains in the domestic cup competitons, but this time in the EFL Cup. The second leg of the 2010 EFL Cup semi-final between the local rivals was on a knife-edge after City had won the first tie 2-1 due to a Carlos Tevez inspired victory.

However, once again Old Trafford was the stage for a United comeback special as the club not only reached the final of the competition it went on to win, but also prevented City having the chance to win what would have been their first trophy of the Sheikh Mansour era.

3. September 2009: United 4-3 City

This moment must be etched into the mind of any fan from the red side of Manchester. It is the 20th September 2009 in a rare sun-soaked Theatre of Dreams. The clock is winding down, it is deep into the 6th minute of injury time. Mark Hughes in the City dugout is already pleading with the referee to blow up for full time. Michael Owen had different plans.

Ryan Giggs receives the ball outside the penalty area, and while the whole crowd is a nervous wreck, the great man plays a beautifully controlled pass to Owen, who makes no mistake with a trademark finish. 4-3 United, Old Trafford goes wild while Mark Hughes goes ballistic.

These are Manchester United moments at their finest.

2. December 2012: City 2-3 United

This time we travel back to The Etihad on a much gloomier December day in 2012. The previous summer, the Mancunian rivals had faced off against one another in the transfer market for a certain Robin Van Persie. The rest is history.

Thankfully the Dutchman “listened to the little child within”. In the dying embers again, Van Persie stroked in a free-kick that put United 3-2 up and into a commanding lead in the title race that the Red Devils would claim as their own in the spring.

1. February 2011: United 2-1 City

Finally we arrive to the big moment. What could top so many late winners and high-scoring games? Step into the spotlight, the one and only, Wayne Rooney. It is Valentine´s weekend in 2011. The game is far from lovely.

A scrappy affair is evenly poised at 1-1 when Rooney puts his name once again into Manchester United folklore and scores an awe-inspiring bicycle kick to win the derby. Did he mean it? Who cares? United 2-1 City.

Video: 'The Next Haaland' boosts United transfer hopes with incredible display vs Liverpool https://thepeoplesperson.com/2022/07/28/manchester-united-target-benjamin-sesko-sinks-liverpool-250157/ Thu, 28 Jul 2022 12:00:00 +0000 https://thepeoplesperson.com/?p=250157 With Cristiano Ronaldo still wanting to leave Manchester United, Erik ten Hag…

With Cristiano Ronaldo still wanting to leave Manchester United, Erik ten Hag knows the importance of adding attacking reinforcements to the squad.

Currently, only Anthony Martial is adept at playing as the lone striker and his injury record is not the most inspiring. Ten Hag will be aware of the need to keep options at hand.

His preferred target has been Ajax winger Antony but the Eredivisie champions have so far played hardball over the price, even going on to increase the asking price to €100 million.

The Brazilian is not the only player being monitored by United with RB Salzburg striker Benjamin Sesko also of interest. The 19-year-old is the next hot prospect off the Salzburg production line.

He has been compared with Erling Haaland, formerly of Salzburg, and the young star does not shy away from such comparisons and instead embraces them.

“Such comparisons motivate me and give me energy,” the towering Slovenian was quoted as saying.

“They do not represent pressure. I will listen and learn so I can be even better than he is.

“My team-mates at the club tell me that Haaland and I are very similar, especially in terms of speed. Most of them even tell me that I’m better than him.” Source: Goal

The Austrian club are aware of the interest their striker is generating and they have set a steep asking price of £55 million for the six-foot-four striker.

Sesko impresses vs Liverpool

And Wednesday’s display against Liverpool will drive up the price even more as the Slovenia international notched the winner and impressed viewers with some outrageous skills.

At the Red Bull Arena, Sesko showed why United and Newcastle are vying for his signature. In the 30th minute he received the ball and breezed past Ibrahima Konate before laying it off to Noah Okafor and continuing his run.

His teammate slid in a first-time pass and Sesko finished with aplomb past a helpless Adrian.

And that was not his only noteworthy contribution. On the stroke of half-time, the teenager pulled off an audacious skill move to leave fans and even Liverpool commentators in awe.

He brought down a high ball with a deft touch and with two Liverpool players including James Milner rushing in to close him down, he evaded both markers with an incredible Zidane-esque turn and left Milner on his backside.

His contributions did not go unnoticed on social media with plenty asking United to snap him up as soon as possible. And the club’s Austrian giants’ social media team also piped in saying, “Update: We now want 1 billion, Bruno and Fred the Red for Sesko.”

Jokes aside, Sesko has certainly enhanced his reputation with the display and United would do well if they showed pro-activeness and buying a future star and building him up slowly in a season fraught with challenges.

Manchester United’s Alessia Russo scored in England’s record breaking 8-0 thrashing of Norway in their second game of the Euros.

The victory in Brighton means that England are now through to the quarter finals no matter what happens in their final group game against Northern Ireland.

The Lionesses have become the first side in European Championship history (both men’s & women’s) to score more than six goals in a single game, according to the BBC.

There were five United players involved in yesterday’s match as Ella Toone and Alessia Russo came on as substitutes, Mary Earps started in goal for England and Vilde Boe Risa and Maria Thorisdottir started for Norway.

It was the latter’s mistake that led to England’s first goal. A controversial penalty was awarded to the Lionesses as Thorisdottir clumsily brought Ellen White down in the box.

Georgia Stanway stepped up and scored the 12th minute spot kick.

Goals ensued from Lauren Hemp, Ellen White and Beth Mead who went on to score a hat-trick but with the hosts 6-0 up at the halfway mark, Sarina Wiegman mixed things up in the second half by bringing on United duo Russo and Tooney.

Less than ten minutes after she came on, Russo found the back of the net as she headed it goalwards from a Lucy Bronze cross!

Talking to the BBC after the match she said, “Tonight was really special. Maybe we fell short a little bit before this tournament when it comes to being ruthless.

“Scoring the goal was unbelievable. It’s what dreams are made of. In front of all the home fans, it was spectacular tonight.”

Meanwhile, Mary Earps had a quieter night than anticipated but kept a clean sheet for the hosts.

Manager Sarina Wiegman said, “We kept playing the way we did in the second half when we were already up 6-0. I’m just really happy with the performance of the whole team.

“We were 2-0 up pretty quickly then we got momentum and we could just play the possession game. We had so much space to create chances and score goals. You could really tell the players enjoyed it on the pitch.”

Wiegman’s side will likely face Spain or Germany in the next round and the Lionesses next game is on Friday when they will face Northern Ireland.

Manchester United’s teenage prodigy Alejandro Garnacho scored and assisted again for Argentina’s Under 20’s side as they overcame Japan 3-2 in the Maurice Revellon Tournament in Toulon, France.

The goal was a brilliant solo effort in which the 17 year old feinted to the right and left to leave his defender standing, before he slotted it coolly under the keeper.

Garnacho has now scored four goals in four games in the tournament, a fact which he proudly proclaimed on Twitter.

His first came against Panama’s Under 23’s in the second match of the tournament.

He also notched two against France despite his side losing 6-2, one of which was a stunning free kick from outside the box.

United captured the exciting left winger from Atletico Madrid in September 2020 despite competition from Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund.

Garnacho played 32 times for United’s academy sides last term, bagging 14 goals and six assists. Seven of the goals came in just six games in United’s triumphant Youth Cup run.

He has already made his Premier League debut for the Red Devils, playing just a minute of their 1-1 draw with Chelsea in April.

He followed that up with 11 minutes in the final match of the season against Crystal Palace.

The Argentinian turns 18 next month and incoming United manager Erik ten Hag is likely to take a look at him during pre-season to decide whether he thinks he is ready to take the step up to the first team squad next term.

Two Manchester United players combined brilliantly late last night as Uruguay beat Mexico 3-0 in a friendly in Arizona.

The outgoing Edinson Cavani scored a magnificent brace inside the first eight minutes of the second half after Matias Vecino had opened the lead in the 35th minute.

Cavani’s first came after brilliant work on the right wing from young United star, Facundo Pellistri.

Collecting the ball almost immediately after the second half kick-off, the 20-year-old performed a skill move to leave two Mexican defenders floundering before taking it down the wing at pace and crossing for Cavani to slot it coolly home.

At club level, it has been a difficult year for Pellistri, who spent the season on loan at Spanish side Deportivo Alaves.

The former Peñarol man managed just 23 appearances over the course of last season, averaging just 32 minutes on the pitch in those games.

However, his performances for United in the 2021/22 preseason, which he capped with a goal against Derby County, and for his national side have been more promising.

United paid €8.5 million for the winger in October 2020 as part of a double swoop of young wingers when a deal to sign Jadon Sancho failed to materialise. Amad Diallo was the other purchase at that time.

Incoming manager Erik ten Hag has promised he will give all players a chance to impress him during the summer before deciding whether they will be a part of his squad or go out on loan.

With more performances such as last night’s, Pellistri could emerge as a surprise candidate to nail down the right wing berth next season.

Manchester United’s teenage prodigy Amad Diallo scored an incredible 97th minute winner for the Ivory Coast against Burkina Faso yesterday in Abidjan.

The 18-year-old came on as a substitute in the 62nd minute as his side was trailing 1-0 to the underdogs in a drab encounter.

Amad’s influence was almost immediate and the Elephants drew level in the 72nd minute with a goal from Ibrahim Sangaré.

Despite pressure from the home side, Burkina Faso held on until the 96th minute when they conceded a free kick just outside the box.

Up stepped Amad and as can be seen from the video below, he scored one of the finest free kicks you could wish to see.

Despite having a man on the line, the visitors had no chance of stopping the sensational free kick.

It was Amad’s first goal for the Elephants.

United invested a lot of money in the Ivorian last summer after scouting him at Serie A side Atalanta, for whom he had played just 16 minutes of senior football.

After signing him in October for £18 million plus bonuses that could see the fee doubled, the Red Devils had to wait until January for him to be eligible to play.

He made a total of eight appearances for the club in that second part of the season, scoring one goal and registering one assist.

He also scored four goals and provided three assists in just three games for the Under-23s.

With a deal for Jadon Sancho looking possible this summer along with Mason Greenwood’s ongoing development, United’s options on the right wing next summer are shaping up to be the envy of the entire football world.

Manchester United snuck past West Ham in what is ultimately a crucial win all things considered but fans were probably most intriguid by a moment that happened after it was all over.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men managed to overcome the London club 1-0 thanks to a Craig Dawson own goal that was somewhat forced by Scott McTominay.

In the end it proved to be enough to get all three points and United’s resilience at the back came to the fore.

Many fans noticed how tired the squad was and how the midfield needs help when it comes to breaking down stubborn defences such as West Ham’s.

For David Moyes’ men, Declan Rice was superb and put on a show for his potential buyers as the Red Devils are said to be keen on his signature.

Many have jokingly suggested both Harry Maguire and Solskjaer were recruiting Rice but it’s unlikely it ever got to that, though it doesn’t hurt to dream.

The two Englishmen have played alongside each other for their senior international side and so know each other well.

Solskjaer often interacts with opponents’ managers and players and so it’s typically something that isn’t read into much unless there’s a link already established.

Manchester United fans loved watching this new angle of the club’s second goal vs Manchester City during the recent derby win.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men managed to overcome their fierce rivals and league leaders 2-0 at the Etihad with Bruno Fernandes scoring the first and Luke Shaw the second.

The Portuguese magician converted a penalty won by Anthony Martial almost immediately after kick-off, quickly giving United an early lead.

Shaw’s goal was a counter-attack that was beautifully orchestrated and there was no player on the pitch who deserved a goal more than him.

Supporters were obviously buzzing after the win but perhaps there were some things they missed initially that is now shown in the video below.

Just as the fans did, the players clearly also show appreciation to Dean Henderson who was key to the buildup to the goal, releasing Shaw in the first place.

It’s yet another weapon in his arsenal that perhaps he exploits more often than David de Gea might do.

If Manchester United can score similar goals more often then it will certainly help them become a more dangerous side as they attempt to keep up with the pace with City and avoid being drawn into a top-four battle.
